QotD: Back where I'm from...
Soda? Cola? Pop? What do you say? Any other regional words that set you apart?
Question submitted by Gladys.
Born in Queens, and raised in Jersey so I've just known it as "soda."
Two interesting regional phrases I know that set me apart from the rest of the country:
1) "regular coffee"- when you order a regular coffee in NYC, you're gonna get coffee with milk. if you order a regular coffee anywhere else in the country, the waitress is gonna bring you over a cup of black coffee.
2) people in the NY area wait "on line." people not around from these parts wait "in line."

I'm not a coffee drinker or anything, but supposedly in Boston at Double D's (my term for Dunkin's) if you order regular coffee it means coffee with cream and sugar. Supposedly. That's what my firend tells me. She said she tried to order one at a DD's somewhere other than Boston and they asked if she wanted cream in it. I think they assumed regular coffee meant caffeinated? I hate thinking that soon we are moving away from the land of Double D's. In fact, I don't think are any Double D's where we're going! SOB!
I totally wait on line. Sometimes I get a weird look from people here, but they mostly just try to ignore me.
